  - to end suffering
  - humans suffer because we continually strive after things that do not give lasting happiness
  - we try to hold on to things such as friends, health, and material things do not last which causes sorrow
- after death
  - one is either reborn into another body or enters nirvana
    - nirvana is the state of final liberation form the cycle of death and rebirth
